Erick Antonio Benitez (b.1988, Bronx, NY) is a multidisciplinary artist, musician, organizer and curator based in Baltimore, MD. They received a BFA in Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art and has exhibited work at Connor Smith Gallery (DC), The Baltimore Museum of Art (MD), Strange Fire Collective (CO), Galerie B-312 (Montreal, QC), Metafora Studio Arts (Barcelona, ES) and Simultan Festival (Timișoara, RO).
Their work has been reviewed by The Washington Post, The Baltimore Sun, BmoreArt, The American Scholar, Terremoto (MX) and Le Devoir (QC). Benitez is also a recipient of the Ruby Artist Project grant, MASB Travel Artist Award, Janet and Walter Sondheim Award and has participated in The Studios residency at MASS MoCA (North Adams, MA) and Pigment Sauvage “La Track” residency in Montreal, Quebec-Canada.
Their work primarily consists of new media installations, performance, painting, sound and video. Through an integration of multimedia methods, Benitez’s work examines the intersecting perspectives of the human condition, nature, mysticism and myth. They create immersive multisensory sculptural installations and object based work that invite the audience into intimate and reflective environments, giving space to explore dialogues and narratives of the human experience in relation to identity, culture, and the natural world.
Their studio process is driven by the experimentation and exploration of physical and digital mediums that often includes audio-visual elements. The bases of their work originates from an interactive research process, where they often travel to site-specific locations to gather found objects, sound field recordings,video documentation and inspiration.
